Harold M. Williams Auditorium

Aside from their problematic designation as “muses” to theirhusbands or lovers, the women artists active in Surrealism faced obstaclesdirectly linked to their gender, as well as to the monumental egos of theirpartners. There is still much to explore regarding the women’s relationshipswith one another and the supportive network of friendships that existed betweenClaude Cahun, Dora Maar, Lee Miller, Frida Kahlo, Jacqueline Lamba, and others.Scholar Abigail Solomon-Godeau investigates how or if these relationsconstituted an alternative to the patriarchal art system.

Abigail Solomon-Godeau is professor emerita in theDepartment of History of Art and Architecture at the University of California,Santa Barbara.
