Rogue Artists Ensemble’s Cowboy Elektra transports audiences to a dusty crossroads where California history and Greek tragedy collide. Original saloon songs, a nearly all-female ensemble, vintage puppetry and multimedia come together in a visual, emotional collage that asks the question: how much can we truly control our fate?
Set against the backdrop of 1869 California, when the railroad was on the verge of reaching the west, Cowboy Elektra takes place in the Palace Saloon, where Elektra’s investigation of her father’s death leads to a tragic revenge plot against her mother. Cowboy Elektra is a modern allegorical feminist tale exploring cycles of violence and control.
Cowboy Elektra is written by award winning playwright Meghan Brown in collaboration with Rogue, with music by Z. Lupetin of the Dustbowl Revival and is directed by Rogue Artistic Director Sean Cawelti.

Sounds of L.A. 2020 kicks off with African stringed-instrument virtuosi. Formed in 2006, 3MA features Ballaké Sissoko on kora, Driss El Maloumi on oud, and Rajery on valiha—an instrument described as part-zither, part-lute. The three, hailing from Mali, Morocco, and Madagascar, regularly meet to perform together and create new compositions inspired by their respective traditions and deep friendship. Amoeba Music calls their latest album, Anarouz (released by Six Degrees Records), "pure magic ... peaceful music for a violent world." This band of brothers has developed a shared musical language brimming with energy, harmony, and poetry.
