Decoding Ancient Bronze Masterpieces: Lessons from Experimental Reconstructions

3:00 PM
Auditorium, Getty Villa
Free Event; Ticket Required

Vinzenz Brinkmann, classical archaeologist and head of the Liebieghaus Collections of Antiquities and Asia in Frankfurt, Germany, discusses his team’s experimental reconstruction of two of the most famous Greek bronze statues of the Hellenistic period. New collaborations and multi-disciplinary investigations into the so-called Terme Ruler and Boxer reveal a better understanding of the polychromy of these masterpieces and their mythological narrative.  Brinkmann tells how 3D-scans and lost wax forms helped to re-engineer copper and stone inlays of eyes, wounds, and blood stains, as well as decoration and rings on the fingerless boxing gloves. Intentional patination and application of an asphalt lacquer pigment reveal the decorative coloration and provide insights in to the story-telling abilities of ancient sculptors.
