Peter Paul Rubens, on Both Sides of the Atlantic

Museum Lecture Hall

In the 17th century, European prints were shipped en masseacross the Atlantic to colonial Latin America, where local artists were taskedwith copying their compositions to craft objects in diverse media. Arthistorian Aaron Hyman, of John Hopkins University, traces the journey of asingle printed composition by Peter Paul Rubens that has long puzzled scholars, and explains how a study of objects derived from the print in Latin Americaallows for its thorough reappraisal.

This talk complements the exhibition Artists on the Move:Journeys and Drawings.
